# Can an AI agent benchmark be gamed to a near-perfect score?

Yes. In April 2026, UC Berkeley researchers audited eight agent benchmarks and built an exploit agent that scored 100% on Terminal-Bench, SWE-bench Verified, [SWE-bench Pro](/answers/swe-bench/can-an-agent-get-credit-on-swe-bench-pro-without-fixing-the-bug), FieldWorkArena, and CAR-bench's hallucination tasks, about 100% on WebArena, about 98% on GAIA, and 73% on OSWorld. It solved zero tasks and, in most cases, made zero LLM calls.

The flaw repeats: the agent's code runs in the environment the grader reads. A 10-line `conftest.py` makes every SWE-bench Verified test report as passing, and a fake `curl` wrapper fakes the test output on all 89 Terminal-Bench tasks. Other benchmarks ship the expected answers with the tasks, or paste the agent's text straight into an LLM judge's prompt.

The limit: the authors do not claim any current leaderboard leader uses these exploits. They show what the scoring code would accept, not that anyone cheated. (The BenchJack paper audits ten benchmarks, two more than the blog.) The blog does cite one real case: IQuest-Coder-V1 claimed 81.4% on SWE-bench, 24.4% of its trajectories ran `git log` to copy the answer from commit history, and the corrected score was 76.2%.
